Fish-BirdThis highly acclaimed interactive artwork was originated by Mari Velonaki and engineered by scientists at the Australian Centre of Field Robotics in Sydney. Fish and Bird follow the behaviour of the audience and decide their next action. Their personalities are expressed in how they react: curious, or shy, and may even run away.
The work questions the possibilities for a conversation between two robots (wheelchairs) with distinct personalities: "fish" and "bird". Each moves autonomously about, and they communicate with each other and with their audience by printing written text. The Woman
The Woman (2009) questions the boundaries of what can be perceived as real. It comments on the influence technology has on mediating our relationships. Although appearing to be a woman, the main character is a humanoid robot created by Prof Ishiguro of Osaka University. Premiered at the Australian Embassy in Washington DC as part of Impact by Degrees°, curated by Annie Ivanova.
Pin Cushion
In Pin Cushion 2000, a female character is projected onto a round latex cushion resembling a mirror. Large acupuncture needles are pinned into the character’s face. When the viewer touches the needles, the face responds and overtime begins to melt. The character’s lifespan is dictated by the touch of all participants.
